EVAN ALMIGHTY

Critics have not been kind to Evan Almighty, the sequel of sorts to Jim Carrey’s BRUCE ALMIGHTY. I’m not really sure why they’re being so hard on it. It’s just a comedy…
Actually, that’s probably why. It’s apparently the most expensive comedy ever made?

Jim Carrey is not in Evan Almighty, nor is his character ever mentioned.
This movie is about Evan Baxter, who was in the first movie, in a small role as an ambitious newsman. In this movie, he leaves that gig for one as a congressman in Washington. He’s still ambitious and a workaholic, but then he finds God, so you know what happens next…

My problem with Evan Almighty is basically the same problem I had with the first film. The subject matter is too big to be dealt with rather sheepishly (no pun intended) in a comedy. The potential of “drama” in the premise of the movie, is just too much to take lightly, and though the movie has “heart”, it does take the issue lightly.

The movie also has many flaws and plot holes, and is not based in any reality at all. It truly calls for disbelief not only to be suspended, but entirely ignored.

As a plus though, it is entertaining and Steve Carell is great.
He’s very funny and likable, probably more so in this movie than Carrey was in the previous one.

So I dunno.
You will laugh, but whether you decide to see it theatrically, or wait for the rental is completely up to you…
