HAMLET 2

Hamlet 2 is a silly at it sounds…I mean, the idea of a sequel to Hamlet is ridiculous, duh, everybody knows that. But that’s exactly what desperate drama teacher Steve Coogan comes up with in an effort to save his school’s Drama department.

Steve Coogan is really funny, albeit a little too weird and annoying in the lead role. But for the most part he is likable and despite his eccentricities, you root for him. Truthfully, I thought this was a strange role for him, so I thought maybe he wrote the film or something, but no, Pam Brady and director Andrew Fleming have that honor. But Coogan is good, so I guess it’s good they went with him.

I am also surprised Catherine Keener was in Hamlet 2, but she was. As always, she’s great. David Arquette was OK, but really had a small role.
Elizabeth Shue was a nice surprise as well. She was really good.
Not surprisingly, Amy Poehler was really funny as a pit-bull ACLU lawyer. Good stuff.

Of the students who put on the play, I wasn’t familiar with any of them, but they were all great, even if very clichéd. The standouts were probably Joseph Julian Soria and Phoebe Strolle, who I’ve never heard of before, but who did a great job.

Hamlet 2 can definitely wait for DVD. I wanted to see it theatrically because I wanted a laugh, but yeah, it can wait. But do give it a chance later, cuz it’s harmless fun, with some genuine laughs.

And yes, as soon as I got home, I downloaded the song, “Rock Me Sexy Jesus”…
