JUST LIKE HEAVEN

Just Like Heaven is a romantic comedy that I had no intention of seeing, but then I ended up seeing it and loved it. It’s really great, at least by romantic comedy standards, which I know are pretty low as it is, but you know what I mean.

Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo star in this sweet flick about a workaholic young doctor and the sad alcoholic who moves into her, er, old apartment. I’m sure most people know what to expect from the movie because nowadays trailers and overzealous audiences give everything away, but hopefully some people will be pleasantly surprised by Just Like Heaven.
The leads are really great in their roles, and by now Witherspoon has surely earned the title of Queen Of Romantic Comedies once held by Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan and Sandra Bullock. Ruffalo is a little different than typical leading men. He’s more like the Average Joe who may eventually become the always reliable character actor, but for now his youth will keep him as a quirky choice for a lead.

Jon Heder, becoming quite well known for his role as the title character in Napoleon Dynamite, which is quickly becoming a cult classic, is also in the flick as a kinda spacey little bookstore clerk. He’s a bit annoying, but kinda funny and harmless over all.

Like even the best of romantic comedies, there’s plenty wrong with Just Like Heaven, and suspension of disbelief is required in bucket loads. But for pure escapism, or as a date movie, this is a great choice. If you don’t make it out to the theaters to see it, then check it out on DVD. You won’t be disappointed.
