JONAH HEX

I’m not very familiar with Jonah Hex, the DC Comics character. I know I’ve read a couple of his stories, but was never my thing. Still, as a comic book geek, and all around geek, really, I felt an obligation to go see the movie of the same name.

This supernatural action flick tells the story of Jonah Hex, played well by Josh Brolin, a confederate soldier who betrays his a criminal general, with dire consequences. He becomes a bounty hunter, but his sole motivation is revenge. The chance for revenge comes when he finds his former general, played in a semi-creepy yet surprisingly restrained manner by the semi-creepy John Malkovich.

To make the fan boys a little more committed to the flick, the ridiculously beautiful in an almost alien way Megan Fox, plays Lila, a hooker with a heart of, well not gold, but maybe a slightly less precious material. She does a decent job. But really, who cares. She’s unnaturally attractive. Don’t fight it.

Oh and there’s a pretty cool cameo of sorts by a pretty cool actor that has now been in three DC Comics adaptations. Cool.

The music for this flick is credited to Marco Beltrami and Mastodon. Mastodon, them wacky, trippy stoner metal freaks from Georgia. They’re not really my thing, but it’s cool they were involved. The music was pretty cool!

The movie was directed by Jimmy Heyward, and he did a good job, in my opinion. But I had read there was some involvement by Francis Lawrence, director of CONSTANTINE and I AM LEGEND. If that’s true, I don’t know for sure. But some of the more supernatural aspects of the flick sort of seem to fit Lawrence’s style. But who knows…

Anyway, so I don’t see this flick making a killing at the box office. I hope it gets a good DVD release, maybe with extra footage and such, and with an R rating instead of the PG-13 it ended up with. Check it out then.
