KUNG FU HUSTLE

This is gonna be a short review…

You know, I don’t really dig the whole martial arts scene.
Sure, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON blew me away, but that was also because that movie had a nice sense of majesty, romance and wonder to it. I kind of expected the same with the highly lauded Hero, but literally left the theater twenty minutes into it. (I know that makes me a bad person, but, it's a long story…)

All that in mind, when I saw the ads for Kung Fu Hustle, I kinda figured I had to see it. Crazy, cool martial arts, but in a wacky comedy? Come on, who could say no to that?
Well, I kinda wish I would have.

Stephen Chow is pretty amazing. As cowriter, coproducer, director and star, he’s well on his way to being the next Jackie Chan. But despite his achievement, I can’t help but feel this movie is overrated.
Sure it’s got plenty of funny bits, but they don’t all really work.
And yeah, it has some amazing action, but it seemed to drag on, AND, maybe it’s just me, but at times it got so ludicrous, that when the more important scenes do happen, they don’t seem to fit, and are less effective because of it.

All that being said, I’m sure martial arts fans will love Kung Fu Hustle.
