MONSTER IN LAW

Sorry, this will be kinda short…

Monster In Law is a really funny, silly, kinda dumb comedy that was number one it’s opening weekend with a fair amount of $$$ at the box office. This is despite most critics beating it to a bloody pulp. I dunno what critics in general have against Jennifer Lopez, who does what she has to do here…she’s pretty good, or if they wanted to bash Jane Fonda’s over the top but I think very good performance (which I think I heard is her first film role in almost 20 years?). But Monster In Law is not the kind of movie that requires a review. You know what you’re getting from the ads or the movie poster. You know it’s about a woman who’ll stop at nothing to keep her son (played well by Michael Vartan) to marry a woman she doesn’t find worthy. That’s all you need to know.

Is it a great movie? No, of course not. But it’s fine for what it is, and you laugh in all that right places (especially thanks to Wanda Sykes, a very funny stand up comedienne who plays Fonda’s assistant), and you know the ending before your ass hits the seat. But who cares. It’s fun. Go with it. Laugh a little, maybe a lot (the audience where I saw it really seemed to be having a great time), and that’s that.

B +
