THE ROCKER

With apologies to Rainn Wilson, I saw The Rocker alone.
I don’t mean that I went to see it alone, which I did.
I mean I was literally the only person in the theater.

The Rocker is only a so-so movie about a 40 yr old who just wants to rock one more time after losing his shot at the big time twenty years before. Rainn Wilson does a great job here. I mean his character is a buffoon, but he’s a likable buffoon and ultimately a well meaning one, too.
It’s sad that a movie that’s basically a rental could make me dwell so much on life, but hey, it’s me, and I’m weird.

The Rocker is full of clichés and totally unbelievable scenarios, but that’s OK. It’s cute and the cast works great. The kids in the band, Emma Stone, Teddy Geiger, and Josh Gad are all really good. Christina Applegate is really nice as one of the band member’s mom, and her chemistry with Wilson is good. Jeff Garlin has a small but great role, as does Jason Sudeikis as a fast talking record exec.

Rainn Wilson might not be as appealing here as a leading man as he is in the supporting role of Dwight Schrute in TV’s The Office, but he’s pretty good.
I think with the right role he can carry a movie.
But if you go ahead and wait til DVD for this one, that’ll be fine.
