SHOOT EM UP

I don’t know what to say about writer – director Michael Davis’ Shoot Em Up.
I mean, on the one hand, it’s a very stupid movie.
But on the other hand, it’s a very, very cool movie.

Shoot Em Up is an insanely over the top, comedic action flick, where the action truly is non-stop. It’s a live action cartoon, and it makes the craziness of say, KILL BILL seem subdued and laid back.
How Michael Davis got Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti involved with this movie is beyond me. But obviously, I’m very glad he did. Clive Owen is just too cool, and he brings it here. Kinda nonchalant and unfeeling, but also very intense at times. Perfect. Paul Giamatti, though playing a completely unlikable character, is just awesome. His delivery, as usual, perfect. And though I would never, ever picture him as a tough guy with a gun, I totally bought him here. Great chemistry between these two.

Also helping me swallow the weirdness that is Shoot Em Up is the beauty of Monica Bellucci. Goddess and a Half. Just too beautiful for words, which is OK, since her accent is so strong…

Again, I have no idea who Michael Davis is or where he came from.
A look at his IMDB page doesn’t show a clear path from his previous work to Shoot Em Up. This movie just comes outta nowhere, and it’s not for everyone. It definitely earns it’s R rating. But everything is so over the top zany, it doesn’t shock. It mostly just makes you laugh or sorta shake your head in disbelief. Good stuff.
