SCHOOL OF ROCK

I really expected better from School of Rock.
I mean, yeah, I know that Jack Black is really annoying, and I know that this is almost a family flick, but it’s just too predictable.

Jack Black plays Dewey Finn (but he’s basically playing himself), a down and out musician who pretends he’s his roommate (Mike White, who wrote the script) to take a good paying job as a substitute teacher. Of course Black has no teaching skills, nor any intention of actually teaching. But when he discovers that some of the kids have musical abilities, everything changes.

There is some good that comes out of School Of Rock. I mean, as a rock fan, it’s cool to see (and hear) music and bands played and discussed on the big screen. Hell, at one point Metallica chimes in in the background.
(Ironically it’ not one of their originals, but a cover. Go figure.)
But a little of Jack Black goes a long way, and after a while all the goofy faces and exaggerated voices gets old. The kids in the movie do a decent job with the acting, but I was much more impressed by their playing. As far as I know they play all their own music, and definitely play better than I do! (But that’s not saying much at all, really.)
But really they did a cool job.
Joan Cusack does a nice job too, but then she always does.

So maybe I’m being too hard on School Of Rock.
It’s not a terrible movie, and the music’s cool.
I just wanted something more.
