SPIDER-MAN 3

Dear Mr Raimi,
WHY???

Spider-Man 3 is as close to awful as you can get, while still not purposely sucking like the last two Schumacher BATMAN movies.
It’s that bad. Or maybe worse.
I can’t get my head around it.

It’s hard to write a scathing review when you can’t really back it up. I mean, I don’t wanna post any spoilers, so I can’t “prove” to you how bad this movie is. I hope you’ll take my word for it, or the scores of other negative reviews on the net.
How anybody can give this movie a positive review is beyond me.
Yeah, I thought Tobey Maguire did a good job, with what little he was given, which was really, really bad, and a lesser actor would have turned this into total schlock.
But aside from Maguire, there were barely any other positives in this thing for me.

As you know from the commercials, this one has three villains, Sandman, Venom, and, um, Green Goblin Jr? Actually, I don’t think Venom is ever actually called Venom, but duh. Sandman IS referred to by that name. Thomas Haden Church plays Flint Marko, who becomes Sandman. He does an OK job, but again, what he’s given is crap. Topher Grace plays Eddie Brock, who becomes Venom. James Franco once again plays Harry Osborn, who is of course, the son of the Green Goblin, yet again seen in cameos / flashbacks as played by Willem Dafoe.

Kirsten Dunst is back as Mary Jane Watson, and, well, sorry, but she annoyed the hell outta me. However, Bryce Dallas Howard is really nice as Gwen Stacy, but guess what, there was no reason to refer to her as Gwen Stacy! Mary Jane has already been written as the Gwen Stacy character for three movies now!!! If anything Gwen Stacy here was written as Mary Jane should have been written all along…
And what was the point of having the great James Cromwell play Captain Stacy. The man had like two lines in the movie! What the Hell is going on here, Raimi?

How did one of the cooler ideas for a villain in comics (Venom) become a pathetic joke? Why did one of the more dated, lamer ideas for a comics villain (Sandman) get put into a major motion picture? And suspension of disbelief is one thing, but his “origin” and use of his powers were a bit much, dontcha think?
And why did Maguire have to endure such embarrassingly stupid scenes?

Walk away Raimi. Take all the money you’ve made from this franchise, which I truly hope is dead for now, and leave the world of comic book movies to somebody who still cares…

D +
