ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO

I never saw El Mariachi, or Desperado, but since the third (and final?) installment in the guitar playing anti-hero’s saga also included Johnny Depp, I decided I should see it. I have to say, this movie is pretty silly. I mean, at at times it surpasses even the horrible CHARLIE’S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE in the farfetched department. But somehow, writer-director Robert Rodriguez’ flick is still watchable and entertaining.

Antonio Banderas reprises his titular role from the sequel (he wasn’t in the original, low budget Spanish language film) and does a decent job. And at least, if he’s faking the guitar playing, he positions his hands nicely. I notice these things. I’m weird.
I dunno how big Salma Hayek’s role was in Desperado, but here it’s pretty small. But she looks incredible, so all is forgiven…

And then there’s Mr. Depp, Bad ass. Steals the show, but not nearly to the extent he did in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. His character here is not very likable, but Depp kinda makes him likable. I’d almost be willing to see a prequel about him…

My hat goes off to Robert Rodriguez. Not really my kind of movie, and pretty violent, although it’s mostly over the top machine gun violence, Once Upon A Time in Mexico is a pretty cool flick.
